This time last year, Captain Sir Tom Moore became a household name when he walked 100 laps of his garden using his mobility frame, to mark his 100th birthday.

After setting an original fundraising target of £1,000, Captain Sir Tom went on to raise a phenomenal £32million for NHS Charities Together, a group of NHS charities, of which Nottingham Hospitals Charity is a member.

Captain Sir Tom’s inspirational efforts helped bring the nation together at a dark and difficult time, and his fundraising through NHS Charities Together has had a tremendous impact on NHS workers across the country, including here at Nottingham Hospitals.

At Nottingham Hospitals Charity, we work closely with NHS Charities Together, and have so far received over £500,000 of the money raised by Captain Tom and others like him. We are currently in the process of applying for further grants from the money raised.

The money we have received so far has helped to provide a variety of wellbeing facilities and services for staff at Nottingham Hospitals, during what has been a truly challenging year. This includes:

• Wellbeing Centres at City Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre, where staff could take a break and get refreshments, as well as peer support from trained volunteers
• Refurbished outdoor areas to provide a quiet space away from the busy hospital environment
• Improved indoor staff areas, with comfortable seating and facilities to store and heat food during breaks from busy shifts
• A new staff psychological support programme, to help NHS workers whose mental and emotional health has been affected by their work during the pandemic

As well as his own fundraising efforts, Captain Sir Tom inspired hundreds of other people to fundraise for their NHS, with the Nottingham community coming together to raise a further £300,000 to support their local NHS workers at our hospitals. Thank you to the late Captain Sir Tom for his tremendous support, and to all who have donated to help our NHS during the pandemic.
