New enhancements help bring a sense of calm to patients

Patients and staff on Lister 2 at City Hospital have seen first-hand the benefit donations can make to their hospital experience.

The ward, which cares for patients with respiratory conditions, has recently undergone various transformations to make the unit feel calmer and homely for patients and their visitors, some of whom may require long-term treatment.

New light features

One of the main transformations is new LED light displays on the ceiling, which feature various scenes from nature. These light displays help brighten up the room whilst lessening the harshness of the normal hospital lights. These roof panels also help patients who may spend several hours of the day lying in bed to daydream and feel more relaxed during their stay.

One visitor to the ward said: “It’s really lovely and brightens up the whole room.”.

These lights have been installed across the individual rooms on the ward, as well as being placed in a communal location that everyone can enjoy them.

Artwork installations

Another big transformation is the new artwork, which can be seen up and down the corridors of the unit. The artwork features familiar flowers such as lavender, adding to the calming feeling of the newly improved ward.

The artwork can be seen from the moment you step on to the ward and has helped the ward feel less clinical, and more welcoming.

Providing cooling equipment

Some of the smaller projects on the ward include new bedside fans. These fans allow patients to keep feeling cool whilst battling their ongoing condition.

Senior staff nurse Emily Thornhill said: “We are very thankful and grateful for the money that we received from the charity. It has allowed us to create a nicer environment for our patients, and we have had positive feedback from patients and relatives regarding the murals and lights. It has brightened up the ward and the patients' bedspaces.”

We’re continuing to work with Lister 2 on further enhancements, including an upcoming project to improve quiet room on the ward.
