New artwork adds a touch of calm to Carrel Ward

Funded by your donations, Carrel Ward has introduced a new piece of artwork to help patients feel more comfortable and at home during their stay. Created by artist Lynne Hollingsworth, who has previously worked on artwork outside the Stoma department and Outpatients at City Hospital, the new display brings a touch of the outside in.

The painting, proudly named Canopy of Care, was kindly supported by a gift left in the Will of a former patient, whose generosity and creativity continues to inspire, leaving a lasting gift of beauty and reflection on the ward.

The mural is created with various layers of paint, inviting the viewer in to experience moments of pause and lightness, and offering patients a space which feels both soothing and uplifting. The artwork will benefit everyone who visits Carrel Ward, at the City Hospital, from patients and families through to staff members.

Art Coordinator Lucy Knight, whose role is funded by Nottingham Hospitals Charity, helped organise the new artwork. She told us: “Canopy of Care brings a sense of peace and connection to Carrel Ward, reflecting the healing power of art within our hospitals. This beautiful mural offers patients, families and staff a moment of calm and comfort in a busy environment, and stands as a lasting tribute to generosity and care.

“I’m delighted that Arts at NUH was able to help develop this new artwork alongside the artist and ward, which will improve the environment for patients who may spend long periods in hospital.”

Artist Lynne told us: “I created this mural to bring a sense of calm and softness to the ward. The branches, blossoms and butterflies are all hand-painted and designed to help the space feel more welcoming and restful for both patients and staff. It was a real privilege to be part of such a meaningful memorial project.

“The team on Carrel Ward were so lovely to work with, warm, supportive, and really engaged throughout. I felt very welcome and valued, which made the whole experience even more special.”

This new artwork is helping to brighten up our hospitals and is part of our charity-funded Arts at NUH Programme, which helps fund artwork and activities across Nottingham’s NHS hospitals.
