Creating space for breastfeeding staff across Nottingham’s hospitals

We're proud to support projects that make a positive difference across Nottingham’s NHS hospitals, and we've recently collaborated with the Capital Estates team and NUH Women’s Network to create two brand new Staff Expressing Rooms at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Located at Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital, these dedicated rooms are now open and accessible 24/7 for staff to privately express and safely store breast milk during their shifts. Designed with comfort, dignity and practicality in mind, the spaces help ease the transition for staff returning from maternity leave – supporting them to continue their breastfeeding journey while at work.

As part of the collaboration, we’ve funded two reclining chairs for the rooms, helping to create a calm and comfortable environment that supports both physical and emotional wellbeing.

This project came to life thanks to the combined efforts of the Capital Estates team, the NUH Women’s Network, and Nottingham Hospitals Charity – working together to meet a growing need among staff.

Jenny Good, Staff Wellbeing Lead at NUH, said:

“I am so delighted that we have been able to create these much-needed spaces for staff, so they can continue their feeding journey whilst returning to work. I would like to give a special thanks to the Capital Estates team, the Women’s Network and NUH Charities who have made this possible.”

Before these rooms were introduced, staff often had to use unsuitable spaces such as toilets or shared staff rooms to express milk – a situation that left many feeling uncomfortable and unsupported. These new dedicated spaces are a significant step forward in creating a more inclusive and supportive working environment.

Katie Jones, NUH Infant Feeding Lead, explained:

“NUH’s commitment to supporting staff returning from maternity leave to continue breastfeeding by providing a private, comfortable space for them to express and store their milk is a real positive.

“Breastfeeding has extensive health benefits for both mother and child. Increasing the length of breastfeeding improves protection, reduces NHS costs, and helps parents meet their feeding goals.”

Your donations make a lasting impact

Made possible through charitable donations, we were able to contribute to this project by funding the key items that help make these rooms not just functional, but welcoming.

These rooms are already making a difference and will continue to benefit staff for many years to come.

Thank you for helping us support those who care for others.
