Patients attending the Gynae Oncology outpatient clinic at Nottingham City Hospital are now being welcomed into a more inviting and comforting environment, thanks to funding from Nottingham Hospitals Charity.
The refreshed waiting area has been thoughtfully updated with additions such as plants, bookshelves stocked with supportive information, and bespoke wall art showcasing local landmarks. These enhancements aim to make the space feel more homely and reflective of the communities’ patients come from across the East Midlands.
“We see patients from all over the region and felt it was important that the artwork reflected that,” said a member of the team. “You’ll spot Nottingham Castle, Green’s Windmill, Newark Castle, and several other well-known locations on the walls.”
The improvements were led by Gynaecology Nurse Specialist Danielle Kitson, who applied for the charity funding after listening to feedback from patients.
“I put in an application for charity funding to improve the waiting room on Clinic 3,” Danielle said. "Patients had shared that the space felt dark, unloved and unwelcoming which was disappointing to hear. We provide excellent care, and we wanted the environment to reflect that.”
Once the grant was approved, the team set to work. The room was repainted to brighten it up, new skirting boards were added, and small but meaningful touches were introduced to make the space feel more comfortable. Staff even gave up their own time to assemble bookcases and rearrange the room to ensure it was as welcoming as possible.
“We were excited to put some care into the room,” Danielle continued. “It’s not a major renovation, but these changes have made a visible difference. We wanted the space to feel considered and calm.”
The newly added bookcases now make patient information more accessible, allowing visitors to browse leaflets and materials that may be helpful during their treatment journey.
“Patients can now browse and take away information they might not have otherwise seen, which is a great bonus.
“Thank you to Nottingham Hospitals Charity for enabling us to make these improvements. We now feel the space better reflects the care, compassion, and attention we offer our patients every day.” Danielle added.
Patients have already responded positively to the refreshed environment. One regular clinic visitor shared:
“I’ve been coming here for a while and suggested that improving the waiting area could really help. The small touches – the plants, the artwork, the fresh paint – really do lift the space. The team here are amazing, and it’s great for them to also have a more pleasant space to work in.”
Another patient commented:
“The makeover has made a huge difference to how I feel when I come in. It’s still a hospital, but now it feels warmer and more thoughtful. The artwork especially gives you something nice to focus on while waiting.”
