A small room is making a big difference for families of stroke patients

In the midst of a busy and noisy ward sits a quiet and comforting room, for families of patients who have experienced the heartbreak and uncertainty of watching a loved one suffer from a stroke. Tucked away on ward C4 at QMC, an old consultant's room has been transformed into a warm and calming area where families can step away from their loved one's bedside to take a breath, gather their thoughts and have sometimes difficult discussions with staff about their loved one's future.

The new area has been designed to offer comfort away from the clinical areas and help block out the noise of the machines and chatter that comes with a busy ward.

For parents who may have to navigate the stress of a loved one's condition and future, the room offers a space where children can still play and laugh whilst being protected from the unfamiliar and daunting sights and sounds of the hospital ward. To protect them even further, an additional door allows parents to let their children in without walking through the ward to get to the room.

Since its opening, the family room has been well received by families, patients and staff, and is used on a regular basis. Many have expressed to staff how nice it is to be able to have a moment away from the bedside and the emotional impact that comes with having to care for a loved one.

Amanda Davies, Specialty General Manager of Stroke and General Medicine, said of the area: “This area is providing a special place where patients' loved ones can go and spend some time away from their loved one's bedside. It’s also allowed doctors to have difficult conversations with family members away from bedsides.

“We’re so grateful for Nottingham Hospitals Charity’s support in finishing this room and making it feel more homely and comfortable for everyone who uses it.”

None of this would have been possible without the ongoing support of patients and their loved ones, and their kindness and donations will allow this room to continue to support families and patients visiting C4.
