The Big QMC Abseil returns for 2025

Posted on: 8 Aug 2025

Nottingham Hospitals Charity’s hugely popular Big QMC Abseil is back for 2025!

This year’s event, which involves people raising money for the charity by abseiling down the outside of the Queen’s Medical Centre building, takes place on Saturday 6th September.

It is a unique opportunity to descend almost 100 feet down the side of one of the tallest hospitals in the country, all while raising money for Nottingham’s NHS hospitals.

The event is open to teenagers and adults aged 13 or over, and it is quick and easy to book an individual or a group spot online.

Michelle Dorman, Senior Community Fundraising Manager at Nottingham Hospitals Charity, said: “We’re really excited to be back with another Big QMC Abseil for 2025. Places always get booked up quickly as this is a really popular and unique event, so I’d urge people to secure their space as soon as possible!

“The Big QMC Abseil is a really fun event, with a great atmosphere both on the top of the building, and amongst those cheering their loved ones on from below. And not only is it a huge, adrenaline-filled challenge, but people are also helping raise thousands of pounds for their chosen area of Nottingham’s NHS hospitals at the same time.”

Last year’s Big QMC Abseil raised more than £35,000 for a variety of areas from across Nottingham’s hospitals – including Nottingham Children’s Hospital, and Hayward House palliative care centre.

Laura Renshaw is taking part to raise money for Nottingham Children’s Hospital, where her 12-year-old daughter Grace is being treated.

Laura said: “I am doing this because my daughter suffers from Crohn’s disease and has had to spend a lot of time at the QMC, on ward D33 and regular visits to children's day case unit.

“As a parent I am in a situation that I can't do anything to help her, so doing this and raising money for the people who do make a difference for her is the least I can do. The people who care for her when she is in the hospital have made it so welcoming and are so good that even at such a difficult time she looks forward to coming.

“I am absolutely terrified of heights, so doing this is going to be very hard for me, but I will do anything I can to help such a good cause!”

Entry to the event costs £30, and Nottingham Hospitals Charity asks each participant to raise at least £150 in sponsorship for their chosen area of Nottingham’s hospitals – including City Hospital, Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham Children’s Hospital, and Ropewalk House hearing centre.
