Hospital team takes on cycling challenge in huge team effort

Posted on: 5 Oct 2026

The Clinical Haematology team at Nottingham City Hospital took on an epic cycling challenge for Blood Cancer Awareness Week this September, to raise funds to improve the experience for patients in their day case unit.

On two static bikes, they set out to cycle the distance of Land’s End to John o’ Groats in just two weeks. But as the challenge progressed and more people wanted to get involved, they realised they could go even further. So, they set themselves a more ambitious target of returning to City Hospital within the time.

Julie Elliott, who organised the challenge alongside Alex Gould, said: “It’s been a confidence boost for those staff who at the start of the week didn't think they could do it. When they've got off the bike they've been so proud of their achievement, it’s made them feel amazing. The event was for everyone to be part of, not just people who cycle all the time”.

On Friday 18th September, Dr Tom Taylor put in a big final shift to take them across the finish line and complete their challenge, having cycled a total of 1,429.94 miles.

Not only did they smash their challenge, the team also raised an incredible £6,308, completely exceeding expectations of their initial £250 goal!

Sally Heighton, Speciality General Manager for Haematology, said: "The whole department has come alive in Haematology and it's brought all the staff and patients together. It's been absolutely fantastic. They've said it's not felt like coming to hospital and the staff from every staff working group, from the gardeners to the estates to consultants, everybody's joined in and it has been a huge morale booster”.

The £6,308 raised will go towards improving the environment for patients and families being cared for in the Haematology department.
