Blog by Barbara Cathcart, Chief Executive of Nottingham Hospitals Charity
I think it’s safe to say that we all know someone whose life has been made better – or perhaps even saved – by the remarkable staff we have working in our NHS.
Almost every day we see news stories about funding cuts to the NHS, and how this affects patients and staff. But we also know that these staff do an amazing job, often against the odds, working long hours and even taking on extra shifts to make sure their patients receive the best possible care.
Today, we want to say ‘thank you’ to the extraordinary NHS staff here at Nottingham’s hospitals, who work tirelessly to provide the best for their patients.
This month the NHS turned 71, so in celebration we are today holding a Big NHS Tea Party to mark the occasion. We’re inviting staff and supporters of the hospitals to come along, have tea, coffee, cake and sandwiches, and share their stories of our marvellous NHS.
NHS charities across the country will do the same, to thank staff in their regions for everything they do for their patients, every day. Through our national NHS charity partnership, ‘Charities Together’, we are determined to promote the impact that local NHS charities are having within their communities.
As Chief Executive of Nottingham Hospitals Charity, which supports the City Hospital, Queen’s Medical Centre, Hayward House, Ropewalk House and Nottingham Children’s Hospital, I am immensely proud to have seen almost £40million raised for our hospitals over the past 12 years. This money makes a real difference to our patients and staff, by providing extra facilities, state-of-the-art equipment, medical research and even staff development programmes.
If you’d like to join us in raising a cuppa to our fantastic NHS, please come along to our offices off North Road of Nottingham City Hospital, from 11am to 2pm today (Tuesday 9 July, 2019). Alternatively, you can hold your own Big NHS Tea Party in your community or workplace.
Finally, I’d like to thank our wonderful NHS staff one last time for all they do – and also thank all those of you who support them through fundraising and donations. You help make our NHS what it is – something to be truly celebrated.
