Super September: how charity fundraising can benefit your business

Marianne is a Corporate Partnerships Officer at Nottingham Hospitals Charity. She works with businesses who have chosen to fundraise for Nottingham’s hospitals.

Choosing to fundraise for any charity often involves getting out of your comfort zone. Over the summer months, a whole range of incredible local businesses have taken part in different fundraising events, including Cycle Live, the Inflatable 5k, our annual Dragon Boat Race, and the Asda Nottingham 10k.

Some businesses decide that they want to push themselves even further, and make an even bigger difference to our local hospitals by signing up for multiple events at once. And we’re really lucky to have lots of local businesses who choose to fundraise for us every year!

The team from Park Plaza has taken part in a number of fundraising events this summer. A brave team of seven colleagues took part in our second annual QMC Abseil in June. They gathered on the roof of the Queen’s Medical Centre and abseiled nearly 100 feet down the side of Nottingham Children’s Hospital at the QMC to raise money for our Big Appeal. They abseiled the height of the building knowing that their sponsorship would impact the lives of children who were receiving treatment on the other side of that same wall!

They took in the views of our amazing city before undertaking a controlled descent from the roof to the ground below. They were greeted back to earth by the cheers of their friends and families. Having done the QMC Abseil myself the year before, I can vouch for that fact that it’s terrifying!

You can watch a video of this year’s QMC Abseil below.

After conquering their fears at the QMC Abseil, the Park Plaza team threw themselves into their next challenge – this time they swapped the roof of the QMC for the River Trent! In July, they took part in our annual Dragon Boat Race. The intrepid Park Plaza and Chino Latino Paddlers battled it out in three heats against other twelve other teams, made up of other local businesses and staff from our hospital wards.

Events such as the Dragon Boat Race and the QMC Abseil are a popular means of fundraising for local businesses. As well as raising vital funds for our hospitals, fundraising events are perfect team-building activities.

Fundraising events are great morale boosters. It’s a great opportunity get together away from the working environment and to have a bit of fun. We took a big picnic to the Dragon Boat Race event and invited friends and family to join us. The Dragon Boat Race allowed team members to build relationships with other colleagues – some they may not have had a chance to speak to at work. Many team members are now asking what Park Plaza’s next fundraising event will be!

As a result of their incredible and intrepid fundraising, the team from Park Plaza has so far raised £2,254.33 for our Big Appeal for Nottingham Children’s Hospital. This money will enhance care, facilities, and research at Nottingham Children’s Hospital, benefiting young patients, families, and medical staff now and in the future.

We run fundraising events throughout the year, and anyone can take part. Check out our events page to find out what’s coming up.
