How our grants work

Our grants are there to fund things that go beyond what the NHS normally pays for.

This page explains what we fund, who can apply, how decisions are made and the charity rules we must follow.  You can apply for charity funding to support projects that improve patient care, patient experience or staff wellbeing at NUH.

Our funding principles

Everything we fund must benefit patients, it's part of our guidelines and the rules we must follow as a registered charity. This means that every grant we make must follow overarching criteria. If applications don't meet this criteria, they are unikely to be approved.

Improve services and support in ways that go beyond the basic level of care the NHS is required to provide.

Patients should be at the centre of every project.

Funding should improve patient care, patient experience or support for families.

Projects must provide a clear public benefit.

  • We want to support projects from across the whole hospital and any patient-facing clinical or non-clinical member of NUH staff can apply.

    We welcome applications from:

    • All wards
    • All departments
    • All divisions

All grant funding comes from donations as the Charity does not receive government funding.

    Money is raised through:

    • Donations from individuals
    • Gifts left in Wills
    • Support from businesses
    • Community groups
    • Fundraising events
    • Sponsorship
    • Trusts and foundations

Charity funding cannot replace NHS funding as the NHS must pay for essential services and basic care.

We can only fund things that add extra value, such as:

    • Better patient experience
    • Extra equipment or resources
    • Staff training and development
    • Projects that improve care

Who reviews your application depends on which grant programme you apply to.

Applications are reviewed by a mix of:

    • Charity staff
    • Trustees
    • NUH Fund Advisers
    • Divisional Management

NUH staff can apply to one of the following grant programmes:

  • Responsive grants - these are quick turnaround grants designed for immediate needs. They can cover any of the categories below, with the exception of research.
  • Large grants – patient experience
  • Large grants – staff wellbeing
  • Staff wellbeing and development
  • Research

You can find out more about each of our grant programmes and their specific criteria on our 'apply for a grant' pages.
